SFAX & DJERBA, TUNISIA

We began the day with a visit to the Medina of Sfax, The architecture is quite beautiful with its many arches, it is similar to the other médinas visited in that it has clothing and accessory shops, various fruits and veggies stalls and all types of meat and fish uncovered and hanging out in the open.

After a long 3 hour drive from SFax we finally crossed the bridge to the island of Djerba. It was off season and quite cool. I much prefer it that way as the service is better when the crowds are smaller. During high season, the population swells from 200,000 to 800,000 people!

We visited an old fort named Bordj El Kebir. The interior was built in the 14th century and exterior fortress in the 19th century.

We walked around the quaint little town of Houmt Souk and spotted many vendors showing their wares.

We continued to the Museum of Guellala, perched on the hill overlooking the ocean, the Musee de Guellala is an emblematic beacon of African Modern Art. It’s a repository of Tunisian and Djerbian heritage, a reflection of the diverse cultural fabric that defines this region, exhibiting Jewish and Muslim traditions

We then proceeded to our hotel, the Radisson Blu which has an amazing Thalassotherapy and Hammam spa; It involved the use of saltwater, mud or sand. It benefits the blood circulation , improves the immune system and stimulates various glands such as thyroid.

We were privy to many treatments which started in a dark steamy room followed by a deep lufa scrub with a body mask, a wonderful massage and we ended by floating in the huge saltwater pool. We felt we had the spa to ourselves, there were very few people. I wish there were such spas where I live!

We just rested, walked on the beach, saw some ruins of what was once a beautiful structures right on the ocean but was destroyed by what looked like a monster wave, then again.. who would build so close to the water!

I probably would have stayed another day! It was a nice interlude before getting on long long flights to Rwanda!
